Describing Ms. Clinton as “someone who represents everything this country is tired of,” Mr. Pence said for those looking for change, Mr. Trump is the option.

“I am a Christian, a conservative and a Republican,” Republican Vice Presidential candidate Mike Pence said, adding, “in that order.” In his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, Mr. Pence played to the hilt the role that has been scripted for him by the presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Mr. Pence, now the Governor of Indiana, is popular among conservatives. Mr. Pence is expected to act as a bridge between Mr. Trump and the conservatives who view him with scepticism. The vice presidential nominee’s acceptance speech was to be the highlight of the day, but Senator Ted Cruz’s pointed refusal to endorse the candidates had pushed the gathering into a commotion before Mr. Pence took the stage. Mr. Pence who had supported Mr. Cruz during the primaries went with his scripted speech and called for party unity, praised Mr. Trump and attacked the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

Mr. Pence also added a dash of self-depracating humour to the other otherwise grave message. Explaining why Mr. Trump chose him, Mr. Pence said: “You know, he’s a man known for his large personality, a colourful style, and lots of charisma, and so, well, I guess he was looking for someone to balance the ticket,” Mr. Pence said. “Well, for those of you who don’t know me, which is most of you, I grew up on the front row of the American dream.”

Describing Ms. Clinton as “someone who represents everything this country is tired of,” Mr. Pence said for those looking for change, Mr. Trump is the option. “The choice could not be more clear. Americans can elect someone who literally personifies the failed establishment in Washington, D.C., or we can choose a leader who will fight everyday to Make America Great Again. It’s change versus status quo, and my fellow Republicans when Donald Trump becomes President of the United States of America the change will be huge.”
